Evans Spencer Jr. 89, peacefully passed away Thursday April 14, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 26, 1932, in Belhaven North Carolina, to the late Evans Spencer Sr. and Martha Ann Lovick Spencer. He was a 1951 graduate of Belhaven High School in Belhaven, North Carolina and graduated with honors from Zane State (Formerly Muskingum County Technical College) in 1971. He served nine years protecting our freedom in the United States Air Force, followed by a long career in the Federal Aviation Administration. He was the Chief of the Zanesville Municipal Airport in the early 1970’s.
He was active in the NAACP, held positions in several Churches, board member of Family Children Services, Altoona, Pennsylvania and other government related and civic organizations in various locations. He loved music, reading and watching sports especially basketball.
He is survived by his loving, devoted caring wife of 25 years, Vera J. Brown Spencer; daughters, Rebecca Spencer and Michele (John) Wright; sons, Danny (Teresa) Windley, Evans (Teresa) Spencer III, Shelton R. Spencer and Tyron C. (Lottie) Spencer. Also are step-sons Irie D. Hughes Jr. (Vickie Tyson) and Randy (Brenda) Hughes, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Michael T. Spencer and seven siblings.
Family requests memorial contributions be directed to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or Genesis Hospice.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 PM on Tuesday April 19, 2022 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 WEST MILITARY ROAD ZANESVILLE. Funeral services will follow at 4 PM with Pastor T.C. Spencer officiating.
