Hudnall Johnson “H.J., Skip” Lewis, M.D., 87, died Thursday, March 25, 2021, at his home under the care of Hospice.
He was born August 30, 1933 in Southampton County, Virginia, and was adopted by Lt. Cmdr. Everette and Mae (Price) Lewis of Zanesville, Ohio at age 9, with whom he traveled to many countries due to his adoptive father’s service with the Navy. Dr. Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 during the Korean War, and transferred to the Marines, where he served as a Radar Technician.
Dr. Lewis graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1959 with a B.S. in Chemistry, and from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1963.
Dr. Lewis joined the practice of General Surgeons Philips, Urban, and Donoho in Zanesville. Later, due to the lack of anesthesiologists in the area, he completed a two-year anesthesiology residency in Youngstown, Ohio and returned to Zanesville to practice.
Dr. Lewis joined Good Samaritan Medical Center and Bethesda Hospital as Staff Anesthesiologist and retired in August 1993. It is estimated he participated in 35,000 surgeries during his career.
Dr. Lewis was an avid gardener, farmer, astronomer, and gun smith.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Aber) Lewis, of 47 years; their three children, Dr. Stewart P. Lewis, Simone (Claude) Lewis Smith, Lesly (Eric) Knowlton; First wife, Barbara (Buxton) Williams; their three children, Robert Lewis, Marcia (Tom) Ruff, Richard (Stacy) Lewis; six grandchildren, Nathan, Kamryn Lewis, Anastasia (Corey) Gibson, Mia, Miley, and Jace Knowlton.
Per Hudnall’s request, no services will be held. Special thanks to Ashley and all other staff with Genesis Hospice, and Falls Township Volunteer Fire Department.
