Mary Lewis Obituary

Mary Anne Lewis, 99, of Zanesville, died Saturday, February 20, 2021. She was born November 18, 1921 in Sabina, Ohio, a daughter of the late William and Anna Tanner Lewis. When she was quite young the family moved to her mother’s family farm west of Zanesville. Mary Anne graduated from Zanesville High School and The Ohio State University.

She enlisted in the WAVES as soon as the United States joined World War II. When the war ended she left active service but remained in the Naval Reserves until she retired as a Commander in 1981. She worked for General Electric in Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Mountain View, CA, where she was a specialist in planning and scheduling. Ms. Lewis retired from GE in 1986 and returned to Zanesville in 1990 to be close to her family. She traveled extensively, from the Arctic Circle to China, Africa and South America. She was a talented nature photographer, an artistic needlewoman, a devoted student of U.S. Grant, a member of Finley Methodist Chapel Ladies Aide and a generous supporter of Zanesville area organizations.

Surviving is her nephew Dr. David (Dollie) Allen of Springfield; niece Susan Lewis of Quincy, MA; and niece by marriage Sharon Lewis of Coshocton. She has four great nieces: Beth (John) Thatcher, Kim (Dan) Wolford, Julie (Brian) Reo and Jolinda (Britt) Miller; and 17 third and fourth generation nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Jane Lewis Allen; brothers: John R. Lewis and William Tanner Lewis; and a nephew John Daniel Lewis.

Members of the family will receive friends from 11AM to 12PM Thursday, February 25 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 WEST MILITARY ROAD, ZANESVILLE. The funeral service will begin at 12PM with Pastor Ron Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in Williams Cemetery with full Military Honors by the United States Navy, VFW Post 1058 and American Legion Post 29.
