ZANESVILLE
Phyllis Ann Joseph, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.
Born July 23, 1931, Phyllis was the youngest of nine children born to Azar and Monsura Joseph. Following graduation from St. Thomas High School and St. Mary of the Springs College, she began a long and gratifying teaching career. She taught from Miami, Florida, Beirut, Lebanon, locally at Rosecrans High School to Cleveland, Ohio where she retired after forty years in the Cleveland Public School system, teaching her beloved first graders.
Phyllis was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and an active member of several Pro-Life organizations. Ever proud of her Lebanese heritage, she was also extremely active in the Federation of American Syrian-Lebanese Club, a non-political organization dedicated to promoting understanding among cultures on humanitarian issues. Phyllis served as the first female president of both the Mid-West Federation and the National Federation.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by all of her siblings: brothers, Phillip, Paul, Thomas and William; sisters, Catherine Ritchey, Betty Jane, Carey and Edith.
Phyllis leaves behind to cherish her memory nine nieces and nephews: Charlotte (Charles) Jones, Thomas (Jane) Joseph, Mona Lee Joseph, Bill (Becky) Joseph, Madonna (Jack) Williams, Paulette (Michael) Boehm, Phillip (Patricia) Joseph, Mary Ann Joseph and Michael (Debbie) Joseph.
Due to Covid 19, private calling hours will be observed by the family. Also, with the ongoing construction of St. Thomas Church, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Jan Sullivan at St. Nicholas Catholic Church at 11AM on Thursday, February 25, 2021, followed by burial at Mt. Olive Cemetery.
